Decision-makers from Moldova visit the Netherlands for a mental health care study visit

November 10, 2014

From the 2nd to the 8th of November, 2014, a high-level delegation from Moldova visited the Netherlands for exposure to the Dutch mental health system. The visit formed part of the project supporting the reform of mental health services in Moldova, mandated by the Swiss Development Cooperation and implemented by the Trimbos Institute.

The visit was coordinated and hosted by the Trimbos International team of the Trimbos Institute. Delegates included department heads for primary care from the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Family Welfare and Social Protection, the head of the National Health Insurance Company, the director of the Centre for Continuous Education for Nursing, the director of the psychiatric hospital in Chisinau, and the directors of primary care polyclinics. The delegation was able to visit and interact with service providers and board level executives from mental health service provider organisations, visit primary care centres, understand financial mechanisms for care and treatment, and visit other social welfare or non-governmental organisations active in mental health care. The aim of the visit was to understand and obtain inspiration from the Dutch mental health system, and bring back lessons learned in the Netherlands or good practice points that could be tailored and implemented in the Moldovan mental health care system.
