High level conference on tobacco and research

June 20, 2017

On June 20, 2017, the Smoke Free Partnership organized and hosted a high level conference on tobacco and research in Brussels. One of the primary goals of the meetings was to address gaps in tobacco research, develop relationships and partnerships between tobacco control researchers, and discuss how tobacco control research can promoted and further developed at the European level.

Clare Moody, a Member of the European Parliament, attended the first sessions of the meeting and the reception in an effort to better understand how she would be able to advocate for tobacco policy research at the EU level.

In this meeting, Bethany Hipple Walters of the Trimbos Institute contributed to the future European research agenda. The Trimbos Institute acted in its capacity of the Netherlands Expertise Centre for Tobacco Control. The groundwork of the Trimbos contribution was already laid in 2015, when the Trimbos Institute published a quick scan of the (inter)national literature on the impact of tobacco policies (in Dutch only). The day was also an opportunity to (re)connect with researchers, policymakers, and tobacco control advocates from Europe and exchange knowledge and new developments that could benefit Dutch tobacco control policies.

Further information about the event can be found here or by contacting Bethany Hipple Walters at Trimbos International.
