After a preparation stage, the second Mental Health Breakthrough Project, which dealt with schizophrenia, began work on 1 February 2006. (The first Breakthrough Project was on depression). In the schizophrenia project, 20 multidisciplinary Breakthrough Teams worked to improve services for people with schizophrenia, making use of the new multidisciplinary guidelines on schizophrenia. The goal was to reduce relapse and facilitate social functioning by improving the use of effective interventions and the continuity of care.
