Dutch Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children

Objective:
The Dutch Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) survey is a study of the health, psychosocial well-being and risk behaviours of adolescents in the social context of family, peer group and school. Unique in the study is its broad scope. It assesses a wide variety of behaviours ranging from psychosomatic symptoms to substance use (tobacco, alcohol, drugs) to well-being at school. These are analysed in relation to a range of social indicators (family of origin, parental social support, peer group affiliation, school performance) and background factors (gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic background). The HBSC study queries over 7000 Dutch school pupils in the final year of primary school and the first four years of secondary school (ages 11-16). Parents of the secondary school pupils are also surveyed. The HBSC study in the Netherlands has been conducted every four years since 2001 (see www.hbsc-nederland.nl). It is a collaborative effort by Utrecht University, Trimbos Institute and the Netherlands Institute for Social Research (SCP). It is part of the international HBSC survey, in which more than 40 European countries and the USA, Canada and Israel are participating in 2009/2010 (see www.hbsc.org). This international integration enables the data on Dutch adolescents to be compared systematically with those of adolescents abroad.
