Developing a web-based intervention for informal carers of people with dementia

Objective:
In cooperation with Alzheimer Nederland and the Geriant Foundation, the Trimbos Programme on Ageing has developed the website www.dementiedebaas.nl. It provides support to informal carers who feel they are struggling to cope as they care for people with dementia. Web-based support for this target group seems a promising approach. The most important component of www.dementiedebaas.nl is the online course. Informal carers can first test themselves to see whether they can benefit from the course. The course teaches them how to deal with problem behaviour, how important it is to reserve time for themselves, how to set their own limits and how to obtain help. Participants receive individual support from a professional counsellor at the Geriant Foundation. Informal carers can also access the website to get facts, tips and information about dementia and informal care. They can also keep their own ‘care journal’ and exchange experiences with other informal carers.
Final result:
To develop a web-based intervention for informal carers experiencing stress in caring for people with dementia
