Cannabis dependence: predictors, course and treatment seeking (CANDEP)

Objective:
Some 80,000 people in the Netherlands smoke cannabis regularly. They are at risk of cannabis addiction. Why do some people get addicted whilst others do not? CANDEP investigates the risk factors. Over a 3-year period, we will study how the use of cannabis and any associated problems evolve in 600 people aged 18 to 30, comparing this to data from the general population. As help seeking for cannabis dependence is increasing, we will also investigate why some cannabis smokers seek help and why others do not.
Final result:
CANDEP is a close partnership between the Trimbos Institute and the Bonger Institute for Criminology at the University of Amsterdam. Findings on the risk factors for cannabis addiction and on motives for whether or not to seek help will be published in professional and academic journals and will culminate in two PhD theses supervised by the two institutes.
