Research and Monitoring studies

According to the WHO, good policy and practice can be developed when information is available about the current state of mental health and mental health activities. The impact of any implementation of new initiatives should be monitored.

Mental Health

The mental health status and the help-seeking behaviour of populations, specific groups and individuals should be measured in a manner that allows comparison across the WHO European Region. Indicators should be standardized and comparable locally, nationally and internationally in order to assist in the effective planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of an evidence-based strategy and action plan for mental health.

The Trimbos Institute carries out the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Studies (NEMESIS), longitudinal studies on the health and wellbeing of the Dutch population.

Other research concerns effectiveness studies e.g. on effectiveness of mental health services (Trend Reports).

The Trimbos Institute has developed the Consumer Quality Index (CQ index), an instrument to measure clients' experiences with mental health care services.

Alcohol and Drugs

The National Drug Monitor and the REITOX National Focal Point produce among others annual overviews of current facts and figures relating to the use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco in the Netherlands.

DIMS - Drug Information and Monitoring System, monitors the market for recreational drugs in the Netherlands, analyses drug composition, observes trends and warns for public health risks.

Dutch National School Survey on substance use is a four-yearly survey on smoking, drinking, drug use and gambling among Dutch school-goers aged 10 to 18.

The Trimbos Institute participated in a number of international research projects (e.g. Analysis of the operation of global illicit drugs markets 1998-2007).

Besides quantitative research the Trimbos Institute also works with Rapid Assessment and Response. This approach was used in a number of international projects to support the development of tailor-made health approaches on problematic substance use among refugees, asylum seekers and illegal immigrants.
