On 18 November 19 people received the 'WRAP-facilitator' certificate. This means that WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) has now also gained a foothold in the Netherlands.
WRAP is a self-help instrument with a clear structure, that is strongly rooted in the recovery concept. This method supports people in recovering their lives on their own terms. It provides a solid framework for peer support from 'experts by experience'.
Facilitators
An early version of WRAP was developed by Mary Ellen Copeland in an attempt to extricate herself from the effects of years of institutionalisation. Since then, WRAP has been disseminated throughout the world by the Copeland Center. The method involves implementation based on the model by training 'experts by experience' to become facilitators. Thus participants develop a WRAP for themselves. Facilitators help by offering support and creating a safe learning environment. WRAP has been scientifically tested in the US, with significantly positive outcomes.
Initiative
HEE! (Trimbos) and the Phrenos Knowledge Centre have taken the initiative to introduce WRAP to the Netherlands because it fits seamlessly with the strategies and programmes already developed for recovery and recovery support. The initiative is supported by five GGz mental health organisations, where most of the recently qualified WRAP facilitators are also working.
