Working on the future of depression prevention

On September 14th, the closed conference ‘Shaping the Research Agenda for Depression Prevention will take place in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Subsequently, a symposium will be organised in the afternoon on the topic of depression prevention.

Around 2020, depression is expected to have become the biggest single cause of the global burden of disease. Because depression is characterised by a high annual inflow of new cases, depression prevention is especially important to protect mental health in the general population. After all, to prevent is better than to cure.

With a view to systematically considering important opportunities in the field of depression prevention, 27 internationally renowned scientists will meet in the Netherlands at the conference ‘Shaping the Research Agenda for Depression’, which is closed to the public. A similar conference took place in the United States in 2009.

Following the closed conference, a symposium will be held in the afternoon which will be open to the public. At this symposium, several pre-eminent foreign scientists will be giving lectures and the most noteworthy findings of the closed conference will be shared with the public.

Prof. dr. Pim Cuijpers (VU University, Amsterdam), Prof. dr. Charles Reynolds III (Pittsburgh Medical School), Prof. dr. Aartjan Beekman (VU medical centre) and Prof. dr. Filip Smit (Netherlands Institute for Mental Health and Addiction and VU medical centre) will be in charge of the scientific preparation.
