Positive response to online group course for parents with mental health or addiction problems

chinupdadThe online group course KopOpOuders (Chin up Parents) developed by the Trimbos Institute has been evaluated as ‘theoretically well-founded’ by the Intervention Evaluation Committee of the Netherlands Youth Institute (NJi).

The intervention is aimed at supporting parents with mental health or addiction problems in the task of parenting. It is offered by mental health and addiction care organisations.

KopOpOuders is an online group course that offers support to parents with mental health or addiction problems in parenting children up to the age of 18. Unlike standard parenting support, this course is based on the systematic reinforcement of protective factors for the child, via the parents.

The course is run in closed chat room format, and is moderated by one or two health care professionals/prevention workers. Chin up Parents consists of eight structured sessions of one and a half hours, revolving largely around the discussion of homework assignments.

Each session has a specific theme. An online ‘reunion’ is planned about six weeks after the eighth session. The online course can be accessed on Kopopouders.nl, which also contains short films, a forum and e-consultation.
