Research conducted by the Trimbos Institute shows that the intervention ‘PIEP zei de muis’ (‘SQUEAK said the mouse’ [a line from a Dutch nursery rhyme]), aimed at vulnerable children, succeeds in reaching this group and generates effects.
‘PIEP zei de muis’ is an intervention meant for children in deprived neighbourhoods who have parents with psychological or addiction-related problems. The intervention was made possible because of the good cooperation between regional actors.
The goal of the research is to strengthen the support for the intervention. The research shows that children who participate in the intervention are usually eligible for child assistance and are often at great risk of developing more problems later on in life. After the intervention parents and teachers find that the children show less problems and better social skills on average.
