The website Minderdrinken.nl (Drinking Less) of the Trimbos Institute is the best researched online intervention for self-help programmes for problem alcohol use. This finding is contained in the report of the Effectiveness Bank alerts (EBA) which was recently published online. The EBA bases its findings on earlier conducted research on MinderDrinken, and has compared this in an international perspective with other research on e-health interventions for problem alcohol use.
MinderDrinken was assessed not only in the context of a controlled research setting, but also by means of a real-world testing. This examined whether the intervention is also effective if the website is made available to the general public, without the restrictions of a research setting. This proved to be the case, and participants indeed reduced their alcohol consumption. It was already known that the intervention is a clinical and cost-effective way to reduce problem alcohol use. Minderdrinken.nl has now also been included in the international Effectiveness Bank alerts. The Trimbos Institute is collaborating with the WHO in the further dissemination of the programme globally.
