Mental Health Services Trend Report 2010 published

The GGZ Mental Health Services Trend Report 2010 provides an update of the main developments in the Netherlands in the area of organization, structure and financing of the mental health services, access to and use of these services and their quality and effectiveness.

Part I: Organization, Structure and Financing
This sub-report, which is divided into four main themes, provides an overview of the current situation and the main developments in the organization of mental health services (GGZ) in the Netherlands. First an overview is given of the current service providers and the structure of the service in the GGZ and of recent trends. The trends examined include developments in capacity and spending. Second, recent ‘market developments in the GGZ are covered, including the strategic policy of mental health service providers and health insurers; and considerable attention is paid to the position of the ‘third party’ – the client – within the new system. A third main theme concerns employment, particularly the organization and regulations involved in support for people with (long-term) mental problems in their quest to find and keep a job.  Fourth, Part I concludes with an overview of developments in the GGZ and mental health policy in Europe.

Part 2: Care utilization and access
This sub-report gives an overview of developments in GGZ mental health care access and utilization in the Netherlands. The report distinguishes between three age categories: children and adolescents; adults; and the elderly. Various questions are dealt raised. Has care for mental health problems in general practice changed during the period 2002-2008?  What is the situation with access to and utilization of secondary mental health care, and which developments have taken place in this respect? During the period 2004-2008, did any changes take place in care for mental problems in nursing homes? The report also looks at involuntary mental health care: how has the number of forced admissions and the number of compulsory interventions developed during the 2002-2009 period?

Part 3: Quality and Effectiveness
This sub-report sheds light on developments relating to the quality and effectiveness of mental health services in the Netherlands. The report focuses on the aim to provide transparent, high-quality information about the care provided, by means of the ‘Basic set of performance indicators for mental health and addiction care’. Which developments have taken place or are relevant in relation to the set of indicators? In addition, the report contains a comprehensive analysis of projects that were conducted in recent years for the purpose of improving the quality of mental health care by means of the so-called ‘Breakthrough’ method. What have these breakthrough projects achieved? The report also examines the relationship between treatment given in practice and recommendations given in guidelines. What treatment is prescribed for depression, and how does this reflect the recommendations in the recently revised Multidisciplinary Guideline on Depression?
