Disease management model

The Trimbos Institute works according to a disease management model. That means we are active in all fields of practice and throughout every continuum of care. Our services extend from monitoring, prevention, treatment and reintegration to the quality and organisation of care. We also engage in a broad range of international projects and activities.

Commissioning bodies
Many of our services are commissioned by institutions such as the Netherlands Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) and the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw). The following types of organisations also make use of our services:

Activities

• Monitoring: early detection and monitoring of mental health and substance use problems in Dutch society
• Health promotion: organising nationwide disease prevention campaigns focused on drugs and alcohol; setting up projects for the prevention of depression and other mental health problems (e.g. our Mental Vitality programme)
• Treatment: developing new guidelines, protocols and interventions in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders
• Reintegration: enabling the community participation of people with psychiatric or addiction issues by conducting research, organising projects for mental health development and rehabilitation, and disseminating knowledge
• Quality and organisation of care: analysing and evaluating the organisation, accessibility and quality of care in the mental health and addiction sectors
• International activities: sharing and exchanging knowledge and expertise via international projects and collaborative agreements

Monitoring

• Adolescents and risk-taking behaviour: a study of substance use by school-aged youth, funded by the Netherlands Health Ministry
• Annual Reports of the National Drug Monitor, commissioned by the Netherlands Health Ministry

Health promotion

• Campaigns to curb problem drinking commissioned by the Netherlands Health Ministry
• National Consultancy for Disease Prevention and Health Promotion in Home Care Organisations, funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw)
• Mental Vitality programme (Mentaal Vitaal), an offensive against depression funded by the Netherlands Health Ministry

Treatment

• Depression Initiative: optimum care for people with depression, funded by the Health Care Innovation Fund of the Dutch health insurance industry
• Treatment of depression in people with diabetes, commissioned by the Association for the Improvement of Mental Health Programmes (AIMHP).

Reintegration

• Development of the TREE website (Towards Recovery, Empowerment and Experiential Expertise), funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw)
• Quality in Care, a national action programme funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw)

Quality and organisation of care

• Mental Health Care Trend Reports, summaries of the key developments in the mental health sector, funded by the Netherlands Health Ministry
• Consumer quality index for long-term inpatient mental health care and addiction services, funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw)

International activities

• Analysis of the global illicit drugs market, commissioned by the European Commission
